Private industry employers spent an average of $27.42 per hour worked for employee compensation in December 2009.
Wages and salaries averaged $19.41 and benefits, $8.00. Private industry costs for employees averaged $1.86 per
hour worked for paid leave benefits and $2.25 for legally required benefits.

In January, 30 states and the District of Columbia recorded
over-the-month unemployment rate increases, 9 states
registered decreases, and 11 states had no change. Nonfarm
payroll employment increased in 31 states and the District
of Columbia, decreased in 18 states, and remained unchanged
in 1 state.
