In 2009, the share of the U.S. labor force composed of the
foreign born was little changed at 15.5 percent. The
unemployment rate for the foreign born increased to 9.7
percent, compared with 5.8 percent in 2008. The jobless
rate of the native born also increased, from 5.8 to 9.2 percent.

Unemployment rates were higher in January than a year
earlier in 363 of the 372 metropolitan areas, lower in 7
areas, and unchanged in 2 areas. Among the 371 metropolitan
areas for which nonfarm payroll employment were available,
346 areas reported over-the-year decreases in employment, 24
reported increases, and 1 remained unchanged.

On an unadjusted basis, prices for finished goods advanced 4.4 percent for the 12 months ended February 2010, their fourth consecutive 12-month increase.
