Consumer Price Index

On a seasonally adjusted basis, the Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers increased 0.4 percent in October after rising 0.3 percent in September. The index for all items less food and energy rose 0.1 in October, the same increase as in September.

Employment Cost Index

Compensation costs increased 0.6 percent for civilian workers, seasonally adjusted, from June 2016 to September 2016. Over the year, compensation rose 2.3 percent, with wages and salaries up 2.4 percent and benefits up 2.3 percent.

Employment Situation

The unemployment rate declined to 4.6 percent in November, and total nonfarm payroll employment increased by 178,000. Employment gains occurred in professional and business services and in health care.

Producer Price Index 

The Producer Price Index for final demand was unchanged in October. Final demand prices rose 0.3 percent in September and were unchanged in August. In October, the final demand goods index increased 0.4 percent and prices for final demand services declined 0.3 percent.

Productivity and Costs

Productivity increased 3.1 percent in the nonfarm business sector in the third quarter of 2016; unit labor costs increased 0.3 percent (seasonally adjusted annual rates). In manufacturing, productivity increased 1.0 percent and unit labor costs increased 2.2 percent.

Real Earnings

Real average hourly earnings increased 0.1 percent in October, seasonally adjusted. Average hourly earnings increased 0.4 percent, and CPI-U increased 0.4 percent. Real average weekly earnings were about unchanged over the month.

U.S. Import and Export Price Indexes

U.S. import prices advanced 0.5 percent in October, after a 0.2-percent increase in September. The October increase was driven by higher fuel prices. The price index for U.S. exports increased 0.2 percent in October following a 0.3-percent advance the previous month.
