Philip Rones, Deputy Commissioner
Philip Rones became Deputy Commissioner of the Bureau of Labor Statistics in July 2003. He was also Acting Commissioner from July 2006 until January 2008. Prior to becoming Deputy Commissioner, Mr. Rones was Assistant Commissioner for Current Employment Analysis at BLS. In that post he was responsible for the Current Population Survey, the monthly household survey that produces the official unemployment statistics and a wide range of other social and economic data. He also oversaw the management of the State and Local Area Unemployment Statistics program, the Mass Layoff Statistics program, and the American Time Use Survey. Mr. Rones has written extensively on a number of labor market topics, including retirement trends and other issues related to older workers, the working poor, work hours, and regional labor market developments, among others. He is a graduate of the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, with degrees in economics and social work. Mr. Rones' office can be contacted on 202-691-7802.
