Technical Changes to Historical Current Employment Statistics Data on February 3, 2012
With the release of January 2012 data on February 3, 2012, in addition to the normal benchmark process,
the Current Employment Statistics survey recalculated historical data for aggregate series and annual
averages for hours and earnings data prior to April 2010.
In previous years, changes in the industry aggregation structure that resulted from the annual sample
adequacy review had not included a reaggregation of the series using standard aggregation rules. The
differences are minor and relate to rounding. With this change, all aggregate data series were calculated
using standard aggregation formulas.
Annual average calculations for hours and earnings data prior to 1990 were calculated using a different
formula than has been used for the post 1990 period. The differences in formula resulted in minor
differences in the calculated value. With this change, all annual average data now use standardized
calculations for the series.
