Proposed 2017 Updates to NAICS

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics and other federal statistical agencies classify industry statistics according to the North American Industry Classification System (NAICS). NAICS periodically is revised to reflect changes in the industrial structure of the economy. The next NAICS revision is scheduled for 2017. A notice was published in the Federal Register on May 22, 2014, to describe the proposed 2017 changes to NAICS and to invite the public to comment about them.

Additional information about the use of NAICS at BLS is available at the Bureau's NAICS webpage. One proposal being considered for the 2017 NAICS involves the treatment of Factoryless Goods Producers (FGPs) in economic statistics. To assist the public in understanding the issue, BLS recently published a new webpage about FGPs that includes information about these establishments and some frequently asked questions.

Comments about the proposed changes to NAICS must be received no later than July 21, 2014.
