EDT Tuesday, August 30, 1994 STATE AND METROPOLITAN AREA EMPLOYMENT AND UNEMPLOYMENT: JULY 1994 Unemployment rates were higher in July than in June in 26 states and the District of Columbia, lower in 18 states, and unchanged in 6 states, the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the U.S. Department of Labor reported today. The national unemployment rate in July was 6.1 percent, little changed from June's 6.0 percent. Employment on nonfarm payrolls was higher in July than in the prior month in 33 states. State Unemployment (Seasonally Adjusted) Nine states had unemployment rate increases of 0.5 percentage point or more in July, and eight states had declines of a similar magnitude. (See table 1.) The rate in Illinois increased by 1.5 percentage points, reversing the 1 percentage point drop experienced between May and June. North Carolina was the only other state to have a sizable over-the- month increase--1.0 percentage point. West Virginia had the largest unemployment rate decrease--0.9 point. Only California (9.0 percent) and West Virginia (8.7 percent) had unemployment rates above 8.5 percent in July, while 16 states had rates below 5 percent. Nebraska, at 2.6 percent, had the lowest rate, followed by Iowa and South Dakota, both 2.9 percent. (See chart 1.) Nonfarm Payroll Employment (Seasonally Adjusted) Over-the-month increases in payroll employment continued in July, with gains in 33 states. Strong monthly job growth continued in Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Idaho, Texas, and Utah. Most of the monthly increase took place in the service-producing sector; services employment increased in nearly four-fifths of the states, and employment in finance, insurance, and real estate was up in about two-thirds of the states. In the goods- producing sector, construction and manufacturing employment each increased in about three-fifths of the states. (See table 3.) Between July of 1993 and 1994, payroll employment increased in 48 states, and 30 of these had increases of 2 percent or more. The largest -------------------------------------------------------------- | State and area labor force data beginning in January 1994 | |are not directly comparable with data for 1993 and prior years| |as a result of the introduction of the redesigned Current | |Population Survey. Data comparisons also are affected by the | |incorporation of 1990 census-based population controls and | |other methodological changes. These changes are described in | |greater detail in "Revisions in State and Area Estimates | |Effective January 1994" in the March 1994 issue of Employment | |and Earnings. | -------------------------------------------------------------- - 2 - percentage increases occurred in Utah (6.5 percent), Nevada (6.2 percent), and Idaho (5.8 percent). These three states have consistently ranked among the top growth states in nearly every industry over the past year. The only over-the-year declines were recorded in Hawaii (-1.9 percent), the District of Columbia (-1.1 percent), and California (-0.4 percent). (See chart 2.) Employment in the services industry was up over the past year in every state except Hawaii, and over four-fifths of the states had increases of 2 percent or more. Construction employment rose in over four-fifths of the states, with nine having increases in excess of 10 percent; Utah had the largest increase (25.8 percent), followed by Idaho (17.1 percent) and Arizona (15.2 percent). Trade employment increased in all states except Connecticut, California, and Hawaii. NOTE: Monthly payroll employment data are provided on a seasonally adjusted basis for all states and the District of Columbia, permitting both current and over-the-year comparisons of the data. The state data are intended for individual state analyses only. Because the state data are not designed for national aggregation, a summation could present a misleading picture of national trends. (See Technical Note.) Metropolitan Area Unemployment (Not Seasonally Adjusted) Of the 262 areas for which July data are available, 30 areas had unemployment rates higher than 8.5 percent, while 98 had rates below 5 percent. Flood-ravaged Albany, Ga., had the highest unemployment rate (17.7 percent), followed by McAllen-Edinburg-Mission, Tex. (17.3 percent). Seven West North Central areas had rates below 2.5 percent, with the lowest (all 2.1 percent) in Des Moines and Iowa City, Iowa, and Madison, Wis. (See table 5.) ___________________________________________________________________________ The State and Metropolitan Area Employment and Unemployment release for August 1994 will be issued on Tuesday, September 27, 1994. NOTE: Data refer to place of residence. Data, beginning 1994, are not directly comparable with those for 1993 and prior years as a result of the redesign of the CPS. In addition, data comparisons are affected by the incorporation of new population controls and other methodological changes.
