EDT Tuesday, September 27, 1994 STATE AND METROPOLITAN AREA EMPLOYMENT AND UNEMPLOYMENT: AUGUST 1994 Unemployment rates were lower in August 1994 than a month earlier in 28 states and the District of Columbia, higher in 18 states, and unchanged in 4 states, the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the U.S. Department of Labor reported today. The national unemployment rate was 6.1 percent, unchanged from July. Employment on nonfarm payrolls was higher in August than in July in 40 states. State Unemployment (Seasonally Adjusted) No state had an unemployment rate change larger than 0.6 percentage point between July and August. Jobless rates in both Florida and Illinois dropped by 0.6 point to 5.6 and 5.7 percent, respectively. Four other states--Delaware, Idaho, Georgia, and North Dakota--had declines of 0.5 point. In contrast, only two states--Arizona and North Carolina--had unemployment rate increases as large as 0.5 percentage point; their rates rose to 6.3 and 5.2 percent, respectively. (See table 1.) A total of 17 states had August unemployment rates below 5.0 percent. Another 19 states had figures ranging between 5.0 and the national rate of 6.1 percent. Two states--West Virginia and California--had rates in excess of 8.5 percent. (See chart 1.) Nonfarm Payroll Employment (Seasonally Adjusted) Over-the-month increases in nonfarm payroll employment continued in August, with gains in 40 states. Since January, all but four states have shown growth in the number of nonfarm jobs. Most July-August increases were small, as only nine states had employment gains of 0.5 percent or more. The largest percentage increases occurred in Delaware (0.9 percent), where workers returned from a labor dispute, and North Dakota (0.8 percent). Five states had increases of 0.6 percent--Louisiana, Montana, Nevada, Rhode Island, and Wyoming. Most of -------------------------------------------------------------- | State and area labor force data beginning in January 1994 | |are not directly comparable with data for 1993 and prior years| |as a result of the introduction of the redesigned Current | |Population Survey. Data comparisons also are affected by the | |incorporation of 1990 census-based population controls and | |other methodological changes. These changes are described in | |greater detail in "Revisions in State and Area Estimates | |Effective January 1994" in the March 1994 issue of Employment | |and Earnings. | -------------------------------------------------------------- - 2 - the over-the-month increases took place in the service-producing sector, which continued its pattern of job growth. Three-fourths of the states experienced job increases in trade, and three-fifths had increases in services and in government. Between August of 1993 and 1994, payroll employment increased in 48 states, 33 of which had increases of 2 percent or more. The largest percentage increases occurred in Utah (6.4 percent), Nevada (6.0 percent), and Idaho (5.8 percent). These states consistently ranked among the top growth states in nearly every industry over the past year. The only over- the-year declines were recorded in Hawaii (-1.6 percent), the District of Columbia (-1.2 percent), and California (-0.2 percent). Employment in the services industry was up over the year in every state except Hawaii, and four-fifths of the states had increases of 2 percent or more. Construction employment rose in four-fifths of the states, eight having increases in excess of 10 percent; Utah had the largest increase (26.7 percent), followed by Idaho (17.4 percent), New Mexico (16.2 percent), and Arizona (14.8 percent). Transportation and public utilities increased in three-fourths of the states. Trade employment rose in all states except California, Connecticut, and Hawaii, and also the District of Columbia. Finance, insurance, and real estate employment went up in three-fourths of the states. Government employment increased in over four-fifths of the states. NOTE: Monthly payroll employment data are provided on a seasonally adjusted basis for all states and the District of Columbia, permitting both current and over-the-year comparisons of the data. The state data are intended for individual state analyses only. Because the state data are not designed for national aggregation, a summation could present a misleading picture of national trends. (See Technical Note.) Metropolitan Area Unemployment (Not Seasonally Adjusted) Of the 262 areas for which August data are available, 119 had unemployment rates below 5.0 percent, while 18 had rates of 8.5 percent or higher. McAllen-Edinburg-Mission, Tex. (15.8 percent) had the highest unemployment rate, followed by Bakersfield, Calif. (12.6 percent). The lowest rates were in Madison, Wis. (2.1 percent), and Iowa City, Iowa, and Lincoln, Neb. (both 2.3 percent). ___________________________________________________________________________ The State and Metropolitan Area Employment and Unemployment release for September 1994 will be issued on Tuesday, November 1, 1994.
