Extent of unemployment during the year by race, Hispanic origin, and sex, 1991-92 Technical information: (202) 606-6378 USDL 93-444 606-6373 Media contact: 606-5902 For release: 10:00 A.M. EDT Wednesday, October 20, 1993 WORK EXPERIENCE OF THE POPULATION IN 1992 The total number of persons who were unemployed at some point during 1992 was about the same as in 1991, and the number of persons with some employment during the year increased by half a million. According to data released today by the U.S. Department of Labor's Bureau of Labor Statistics, 21.4 million persons experienced some unemployment in 1992, although most of them held jobs at some time during the year. In total, 133.1 million persons held jobs during at least part of the year, and 80.7 million of them were in full-time, year-round jobs, 1.1 million more than in 1991. These data come from supplemental questions asked each March as part of the Current Population Survey (CPS), the monthly survey of about 60,000 households conducted by the Bureau of the Census for the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Because the reference period for the March supplement is a full year, the total number of persons with some employment and/or unemployment over such a long period greatly exceeds the average monthly levels, which are based on a 1-week reference period. For example, the 133.1 million persons reported in the March 1993 survey as having worked at some time during 1992 was 15-1/2 million larger than the average of the 12 monthly observations (117.6 million). And the 21.4 million who encountered some unemployment during 1992 was more than twice the average monthly unemployment level of 9.4 million. Persons with Employment The total of 133.1 million persons who worked at some time during 1992 was about 500,000 higher than the number for 1991. Year-round, full-time employment increased by much more--1.1 million. (Year-round, full-time work refers to employment of 50-to-52 weeks at 35 hours or more during most weeks.) The proportion of workers who were employed full time year round increased 0.7 percentage point in 1992 to 60.7 percent. Among men, a total of 71.2 million worked all or part of 1992, 77.2 percent of the male population. Two-thirds of the men with employment worked year round, full time. Since 1989, the proportion of employed men who work full-time, year-round has fallen by over 2 percentage points, largely due to increases in the proportion experiencing some unemployment. The proportion of Hispanic men who worked during 1992 was 78.9 percent, 1 percentage point lower than in 1991. This "employment- population rate" for black men also declined, to 68.3 percent, and the rate for white men decreased half a percentage point to 78.4 percent. Since 1989, the rate of men in each race/ethnic group has fallen by about 2 percentage points. - 2 - A total of 61.9 million women worked during 1992, about the same number as a year earlier. Nevertheless, employed women continued to intensify their job-market role, as the number working year round on full- time schedules increased by over 700,000 to 33.2 million, representing over half of all working women. Among the race/ethnic groups, the proportion of black and Hispanic women with some employment activity decreased from a year earlier; for white women, that measure was little changed. A higher proportion of black and white women who did work held full-time, year-round jobs in 1992 than a year earlier. Since 1989, the proportion of white women working during the year has held fairly steady, while the proportions of black and Hispanic women with some work during the year have each decreased by about 2-1/2 percentage points. Persons with Unemployment The total number of persons unemployed for at least 1 week was 21.4 million in 1992, little different from the previous year. The proportion of the labor force experiencing some unemployment was 15.8 percent, also about unchanged from 1991. Between 1989 and 1991, the total number of persons experiencing unemployment during the year had risen by 4 million, with the proportion of workers encountering unemployment rising nearly 3 percentage points. Among the race/ethnic groups, 15.0 percent of whites experienced unemployment in 1992, compared with 22.1 percent of blacks; both proportions were about the same as in the previous year. Among Hispanics, the proportion experiencing unemployment increased slightly to 22.5 percent. Nearly 9 out of 10 persons with some unemployment during the year reported that they also worked. The median number of weeks of unemployment for these workers increased slightly to 14.2 weeks; since 1989, the median has increased by nearly 3 weeks, reflecting a substantial increase in the number of persons jobless for 6 months or more. The median weeks of unemployment for whites (13.8 weeks) increased only slightly from 1991, while the median for blacks (17.8 weeks) increased by about 1-1/2 weeks and that for Hispanics (16.9 weeks) rose by over 2 weeks. ------------------------------------------------------------- | Information in this release will be made available to | |sensory impaired individuals upon request.
