Average annual expenditures per consumer unit rose 2.6 percent in 2007 following an
increase of 4.3 percent in 2006. Moderate increases in spending on housing
(3.4 percent), transportation (2.9 percent), and food (0.4 percent), contributed
to the small increase in 2007.

In October, 38 states and the District of Columbia
recorded over-the-month unemployment rate increases,
5 states registered decreases, and 7 states had no
change. Nonfarm payroll employment rose in 10 states
plus the District of Columbia and fell in 40 states.
