Unemployment in September 2014

In September 2014, the unemployment rate declined by 0.2 percentage point to 5.9 percent and the number of unemployed persons decreased by 329,000 to 9.3 million. From September 2013 to September 2014, the unemployment rate dropped 1.3 percentage points and the number of unemployed declined by 1.9 million.

Among the unemployed, the number of job losers and people who completed temporary jobs decreased by 306,000 in September to 4.5 million. The number of long-term unemployed (those jobless for 27 weeks or more) was essentially unchanged at 3.0 million in September. The long-term unemployed accounted for 31.9 percent of the unemployed. Over the past 12 months, the number of long-term unemployed is down by 1.2 million.
