CPI unchanged over the year ending September 2015

From September 2014 to September 2015, the Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers was unchanged, following a 0.2-percent increase for the 12 months ending in August 2015. Energy prices declined 18.4 percent over the past year, but food prices increased 1.6 percent and prices for all items less food and energy increased 1.9 percent.

Within energy, all of the major component indexes continued to decline during the 12 months ending in September 2015. The electricity index fell 0.4 percent, while the other energy indexes dropped more sharply. Fuel oil prices declined 34.9 percent from September 2014 to September 2015, while gasoline prices dropped 29.6 percent and natural gas prices dropped 12.1 percent.

Within food, the index for food at home rose 0.8 percent during the 12 months ending in September 2015, while the index for food away from home rose 2.9 percent. Five of the six major food indexes rose over the past year, with only the dairy index declining, by 2.3 percent. 

The 1.9-percent increase in the index for all items less food and energy from September 2014 to September 2015 was the largest over-the-year change since July 2014. The shelter index increased 3.2 percent during the past year, while the rent index rose 3.7 percent. Both of these figures have been slowly trending upward.
