Coffee prices down 3.8 percent from August 2015 to August 2016

Today is National Coffee Day, a day that always perks us up. To mark the occasion, we look at trends in coffee prices over the past decade. Coffee prices were 22 percent higher in August 2016 than they were in January 2006. That’s about the same increase as the Consumer Price Index for all items. Coffee prices have moved up and down much more sharply than overall consumer prices, however. Coffee prices were 3.8 percent lower in August 2016 than a year earlier; overall consumer prices were 1.1 percent higher.

Prices for roasted coffee have increased more rapidly over the past decade than prices for instant and freeze dried coffee. Prices for roasted coffee were 23 percent higher in August 2016 than in August 2006. By comparison, prices for instant and freeze dried coffee rose 14 percent over the same period.
If you drink tea, you may like to know that prices for other beverage materials, including tea, increased 11 percent from August 2006 to August 2016.
Coffee and tea go best with a little something sweet to eat. Prices for fresh sweetrolls, coffeecakes, and doughnuts rose 33 percent from August 2006 to August 2016.
