Producer Price Index for final demand decreased 0.1 percent for the year ended March 2016

The Producer Price Index for final demand decreased 0.1 percent from March 2015 to March 2016, after being unchanged for the year ending February 2016. The index for final demand goods decreased 2.6 percent, led by a 13.8-percent decline in prices for final demand energy.

Within final demand energy, the producer price indexes for finished consumer energy goods (−11.7 percent), government purchased energy (−20.8 percent), and energy for export (−30.7 percent) all decreased from March 2015 to March 2016.

For the year ended March 2016, the index for final demand services increased 1.2 percent. The index for trade services, which measures changes in the margins wholesalers and retailers receive, increased 1.2 percent. Prices for transportation and warehousing services decreased 2.3 percent, the thirteenth straight 12-month decrease.
