NEW YORK-NORTHERN NEW JERSEY CPI UP 0.4 PERCENT IN NOVEMBER,
UP 3.9 PERCENT FROM YEAR AGO
Retail prices in the greater New York area, as measured by the
Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers (CPI-U), rose 0.4
percent in November, following four months of changes that ranged
from -0.1 to 0.2 percent. Michael L. Dolfman, Regional Commissioner
of the U. S. Department of Labor's Bureau of Labor Statistics, said
that the November index was led by higher energy prices. Increases
for food and shelter also contributed to the November rise. These
increases were partially offset by lower apparel prices. For the
year ended in November 2007, the CPI-U rose 3.9 percent. Core
inflation, as measured by the all items less food and energy index,
was up 2.1 percent over the year.
The energy index increased a sharp 6.6 percent in November, after
registering four months of declines ranging from -0.7 to -4.0
percent. (See chart A.) The November increase was largely
attributable to gasoline prices that jumped 10.2 percent over the
month. Dolfman noted that the gasoline index was 37.1 percent higher
than a year ago, the largest 12-month increase since September 2005,
following Hurricane Katrina. The index for natural gas rose 6.4
percent during the month of November, and residential fuel oil prices
also escalated. In contrast, electricity prices declined 1.5 percent
over the month.

The transportation index rose 2.4 percent in November. The rise
largely reflected the advance in gasoline prices, though higher
airline fares also contributed to the increase.
The food and beverages index rose 0.3 percent. Prices for food at
home were up 0.4 percent over the month, reflecting higher prices for
uncooked beef roasts, ice cream and related products, other fresh
fruits, tomatoes, and candy and chewing gum. Prices for food away
from home also increased by 0.4 percent.
The housing index rose 0.4 percent over the month. The shelter
component was up 0.1 percent, reflecting increases of 0.3 percent in
residential rent and 0.2 percent for owners' equivalent rent. Among
other components of housing, the fuels and utilities index rose 3.6
percent, largely due to the sharp increases in natural gas and
residential fuel oil. Household furnishings and operations declined
by 0.6 percent with lower prices for other appliances.
The apparel index declined 2.8 percent in November, largely
reflecting pre-holiday sales for women's suits and separates as well
as women's footwear.
Among other components, the indexes for both medical care and
other goods and services were unchanged over the month. Education
and communication inched down 0.1 percent, and the recreation index
declined 0.5 percent.
With the New York-Northern New Jersey Consumer Price Index for All
Urban Consumers at 229.504 in November (1982-84=100), $22.95 was
required to purchase what $10 could in the 1982-84 base period. The
purchasing power of the dollar was 43.6 cents in 1982-84 dollars and
15.1 cents in 1967 dollars. In November, the Consumer Price Index
for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W) was 223.716, up
0.5 percent over the month. The CPI-W rose 4.2 percent over the
year. On a 1967 base, the November CPI-W was 636.976.
