Washington-Baltimore Consumer Price Index: February 2009 (PDF)
Food at Home, Energy, and Shelter Prices Rise
Prices for food at home, shelter, and energy in the Washington-Baltimore area all rose in February, as measured by the Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers (CPI-U), the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the U.S. Department of Labor reported today. Sheila Watkins, the Bureau’s regional commissioner, noted that food at home prices advanced 3.9 percent and shelter prices increased 3.0 percent over the year, while energy prices dropped 13.6 percent since last February. (See table 1.)
The food at home index edged up 0.2 percent in February. The recent increase reflected higher prices for a number of items including bananas and salad dressing, while lower prices for fresh fish and seafood, pork, and uncooked ground beef, among others, moderated the overall advance.
The Washington-Baltimore area food at home index stood at 137.620 on the December 1997=100 base, which means that grocery shoppers in the Washington-Baltimore area would have spent $13.76 last month for a market basket of food items that cost $10.00 in December 1997.
The shelter index increased 0.3 percent since January, due largely to higher prices for other lodging away from home, including hotels and motels. The rent of primary residence index also increased in February, up 0.3 percent, while the owners’ equivalent rent of primary residence index was unchanged over the month. Over the last 12 months, the rent of primary residence index advanced 5.1 percent and the owners’ equivalent rent of primary residence index rose 2.9 percent.
The Washington-Baltimore area shelter index stood at 154.867 on the December 1997=100 base, which means that area residents would have spent $15.49 on various types of shelter that cost $10.00 in December 1997.
Following six consecutive months of decline totaling 34.2 percent, energy prices rose 2.6 percent in February. The one-month increase was dominated by a 9.4-percent jump in gasoline prices. Despite the recent advance, gasoline prices were 35.4 percent below year-ago levels. Electricity prices were also higher in February, edging up 0.2 percent over the month to a level 12.5 percent higher than a year ago. Moderating the increase in energy prices, the utility (piped) gas service index fell 5.8 percent since January. Utility gas prices were also lower over the year, declining 5.2 percent.
The Washington-Baltimore energy index stood at 177.267 on the November 1996=100 base, which means that area energy users would have spent $17.73 for a group of energy items that cost $10.00 in November 1996.
The Washington-Baltimore, D.C.-Md.-Va.-W.Va., Consolidated Metropolitan Statistical Area (CMSA) includes the District of Columbia; Baltimore City and the counties of Anne Arundel, Baltimore, Calvert, Carroll, Charles, Frederick, Harford, Howard, Montgomery, Prince George’s, Queen Anne’s, and Washington in Maryland; the cities of Alexandria, Fairfax, Falls Church, Fredericksburg, Manassas, and Manassas Park and the counties of Arlington, Clarke, Fairfax, Fauquier, King George, Loudoun, Prince William, Rappahannock, Spotsylvania, Stafford, and Warren in Virginia; and the counties of Berkeley and Jefferson in West Virginia.
