CONSUMER PRICE INDEX FOR THE SAN FRANCISCO AREA, OCTOBER 2009
Consumer prices in the San Francisco metropolitan area edged up 0.1 percent during both the past two months and over the year, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the U.S. Department of Labor. Regional Commissioner Richard J. Holden noted that the special index for all items less food and energy was unchanged since August, but rose 0.8 percent since last October. Local Consumer Price Index data are not seasonally adjusted.
The transportation index increased 1.5 percent since August 2009, but decreased 1.7 percent for the year. Private transportation costs rose 1.8 percent for the past two months, but declined 1.3 percent since October 2008. Gasoline prices advanced 1.7 percent over the past two months, but fell 12.4 percent for the year.
The housing index decreased 0.5 percent over the past two months and 0.4 percent over the past year. Prices for fuels and utilities climbed 0.8 percent since August and increased 1.4 percent over the year. Within the fuels and utilities index, prices for household electricity and utility (piped) gas service increased 0.4 percent and 1.7 percent since August, respectively. Compared to one year ago, prices for electricity rose 4.8 percent, but prices for utility (piped) gas service fell 14.2 percent. Household furnishings decreased 2.1 percent since August and declined 1.4 percent since October 2008.
Prices paid for food and beverages advanced 0.5 percent since August and 0.4 percent for the year. The food at home index, which measures grocery prices, increased 0.5 percent over the past two months, but fell 2.9 percent since October 2008. Prices for food away from home rose 0.4 percent since August and increased 4.3 percent for the year. Prices for alcoholic beverages increased 1.0 percent for the month, but decreased 0.2 percent since last year.
Medical care prices climbed 0.3 percent for the past two months and rose 4.9 percent for the past 12 months.
The apparel index declined 1.1 percent since August and 3.8 percent for the year. Prices for recreation went up 0.6 percent over the past two months and 1.2 percent since October 2008.
Education and communication prices decreased 0.2 percent for the past two months, but increased 3.0 percent during the year. Other goods and services edged up 0.1 percent since August and rose 4.1 percent on an annual basis.
The All Items Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers (CPI-U) in the San Francisco-Oakland-San Jose Consolidated Metropolitan Statistical Area, stands at 226.051 (1982-84=100). This means a market basket of goods and services that cost $100 in 1982-84 would have cost $226.05 in October 2009.
