CONSUMER PRICE INDEX FOR THE SAN FRANCISCO AREA, DECEMBER 2009

The Bureau of Labor Statistics of the U.S. Department of Labor reported today that the All Items Consumer Price Index (CPI) in the San Francisco-Oakland-San Jose, CA area declined 0.8 percent for the two months ending in December 2009. Regional Commissioner Richard J. Holden noted that the decrease in the all items index was mainly due to lower prices for housing, food and beverages, and transportation. For the year ending December 2009, overall prices increased 2.6 percent. The special aggregate index for energy jumped 30.4 percent since December 2008, while the special index for all items less food and energy rose 1.5 percent. Local Consumer Price Index data are not seasonally adjusted.

The housing index declined 1.0 percent since October 2009, yet increased 0.3 percent since December 2008. The shelter sub-index of housing decreased 0.9 percent for the past two months and edged down 0.2 percent for the year. Household fuels and utilities fell 6.6 percent for the two months ending December 2009, but rose 4.5 percent since last year. Prices for utility (piped) gas service dropped 13.7 percent in the past two months, but increased 0.6 percent since December 2008. Electricity prices declined 8.3 percent since October 2009, but advanced 4.3 percent for the year. Prices for household furnishings and operations increased 2.1 percent during the past two months and rose 1.0 percent for the year.

Transportation prices declined 0.9 percent for the latest two-month period, but were 13.1 percent higher since December 2008. Gasoline prices decreased 4.7 percent since October 2009, but jumped 56.6 percent for the year ending December 2009.

Prices paid for food and beverages declined 1.3 percent from October to December 2009 and fell 1.1 percent for the year. The food at home index, which measures grocery prices, decreased 2.3 percent for the past two months and 4.9 percent for the year. Prices for food away from home fell 0.2 percent for the latest two-month period, but rose 3.3 percent since a year ago. Prices for alcoholic beverages declined 1.0 percent over the latest two-month period and 1.2 percent since December 2008.

Apparel prices declined 0.7 percent since October 2009. Compared with last year, apparel prices rose 0.7 percent.

Medical care prices edged up 0.1 percent for the past two months and increased 4.7 percent for the year.

Education and communication prices slipped down 0.1 percent since October 2009, but rose 2.6 percent in the past 12 months.

Among the remaining expenditure categories, recreation prices declined 0.4 percent for the past two months, yet advanced 2.3 percent for the year. The other goods and services index increased 1.0 percent during the latest two-month period and rose 4.7 percent for the year.

The All Items Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers (CPI-U) in the San Francisco-Oakland-San Jose Metropolitan Statistical Area, stands at 224.239 (1982-84=100). This means a market basket of goods and services that cost $100.00 in 1982-84 would have cost $224.24 in December 2009.
