From January 2023 to January 2024, nonfarm payroll employment increased in 59 metropolitan areas, decreased in 3 areas, and was essentially unchanged in 327 areas. The largest percentage gain occurred in Madera, California, at 6.6 percent. Employment in the area rose from 41,200 in January 2023 to 43,900 in January 2024, or +2,700.

An additional six metropolitan areas had over-the-year employment increases of at least 5.0 percent: Ithaca, New York, and Yuba City, California (6.2 percent each), Merced, California (6.1 percent); Barnstable Town, Massachusetts (5.7 percent); Coeur d'Alene, Idaho (5.4 percent); and Napa, California (5.2 percent).
The largest employment gains from January 2023 to January 2024 occurred in New York-Newark-Jersey City, New York-New Jersey-Pennsylvania (+160,100), Houston-The Woodlands-Sugar Land, Texas (+83,300), and Miami-Fort Lauderdale-West Palm Beach, Florida (+78,900).
The over-the-year decreases in employment occurred in Portland-Vancouver-Hillsboro, Oregon-Washington (−23,600, or −1.9 percent), Memphis, Tennessee-Mississippi-Arkansas (−12,600, or −1.9 percent), and Kahului-Wailuku-Lahaina, Hawaii (−5,400, or −7.1 percent).
