Enter a keyword and select to search by BLS indexes, titles, or descriptions. Use quotes around a keyword to search for results with whole words, for example, to get results with "auto" as a whole word (as in the index "Auto supply stores") rather than with "auto" as part of a word (as in the index "Automated data processing services"). Indexes are detailed industry classifications that correspond to a 6-digit NAICS classification. Indexes are helpful for finding the NAICS classification for an establishment's business activity. Titles correspond to a NAICS classification
that contains a range of related business activities. Descriptions describe the activities of establishments in a NAICS classification. Each NAICS classification has a title and description, however many indexes can relate to one NAICS classification. It is also possible to search by one to six digits of a NAICS code in the BLS NAICS Search
application.
The results can be sorted Text A-Z or Codes 0-9 (ascending), or Text Z-A or Codes 9-0 (descending). The default sort is "Text A-Z."" Two filter options are available for "Titles," "Descriptions," or "All" searches: "Only 6-digit NAICS" and "All NAICS Levels." The default filter option is "Only 6-digit NAICS." Indexes are only available at the 6-digit level so no filter options show when searching indexes. The filter option "All NAICS Levels" will show NAICS results at all levels for a text keyword, or results for all levels at and below for a code.
Click a search result to show the NAICS full title, NAICS code, and description. Cross reference information will show if available for the 6-digit NAICS. All related indexes will also show for 6-digit NAICS. All NAICS in the description and cross reference sections can be clicked to submit a "Titles" search for the code. The filter is set to "All NAICS Levels" when a NAICS link is clicked in the description or cross reference sections that is less than six digits.
The "Hierarchy" tab provides a BLS NAICS tree starting with domains, supersectors, and sectors that can be expanded or collapsed to show more or less detail. Enter a code and click the button to show all codes at and under the entered code. Click the "Details" link to search the NAICS. The application will show the NAICS and all NAICS at the next lower, more-detailed level on the "Search" tab.
The hash of the URL is updated based on user actions and can be used to return to a specific state for a tab. Each tab is updated based on changes to the hash in the URL with the exception of the Hierarchy tab. The hash of the URL on the Hierarchy tab is updated with the latest user actions, but the hash is only used for updating the state of the Hierarchy tab when first loading a URL that is specific to the Hierarchy tab. Forward and backward web page navigation in the browser can be used to return to a previous state for a tab but the previous filter, sort, and selected search result item may not return because these are set globally for the application. To return to any previous filter, sort, or selected search result item settings when using browser navigation, the user can refresh the web page.
