This page provides links to tables with expenditure and income data calculated by the Consumer Expenditure Surveys. Some tables provide population means (as opposed to means of those reporting), percent shares, and variance measures (Standard Error and Coefficient of Variation). Other tables present aggregate expenditures and income and related aggregate percent shares. The tables first provide the most recent data and the links to tables for selected historical time periods. The latest annual tables were released on September 10, 2019. The latest midyear tables were released on April 28, 2020.
To maximize your use of the CE tables, you may review “Getting the most from Consumer Expenditure Survey (CE) tables” and How does the variability of Consumer Expenditure data impact your analysis?
CE provides these tables in two sections. The first contains tables that we produce regularly and the second provides experimental tables that have recently been developed.
Regular Tables present data in these categories:
Research tables provide annual means for new classifications of expenditures or socio-economic characteristics. Currently, CE provides these research tables.
Annual Calendar Year Tables
We publish annual calendar year tables in two series:

Below are the tables for the current period (2017 - 2018); for tables covering 1986-1987 forward, see historical tables. These tables cover two years to increase the reliability of the data.
All 2017-2018 cross-tabulated tables in one zip file.

Metropolitan Statistical Areas Tables
Below are the tables for the current period (2017 - 2018); for tables covering 1972-1973 and 1986-1987 forward, see historical tables. These tables cover two years to increase the reliability of the data.
The CE underwent a sample change in 2015. The Cleveland Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) has been dropped from the sample and the geographical boundaries of the Boston MSA have changed significantly such that estimates for 2015 are not comparable to estimates for 2014. Thus, both Cleveland and Boston are not represented in the 2014-2015 tables. Boston returned in the 2015-2016 tables when two years of data based on the new boundaries become available.
Changes in the CE sample occur about every ten years and the number of MSAs for which survey estimates are available will change. CE estimates are available for 26 selected MSAs from 1986 to 1995, for 28 MSAs from 1996 to 2004, for 24 MSAs in 2005, for 18 MSAs from 2006 to 2014, for 16 MSAs in 2015, and for 22 MSAs starting in 2016.
Region, Census Division, and Area Tables
The tables below are for the current period (2017 - 2018); for tables covering 1987-1988 forward, see historical tables. These tables cover two years to increase the reliability of the data.
The high-income-before-taxes table was replaced by the higher-income-before-taxes table in 2003-14, see historical tables. This higher-income-before-taxes table included additional high income ranges.
The discontinued high income tables below contain expenditure data classified by income ranges. Two-year tables from 1997-98 through 2001-02 are available below in either ASCII text format (TXT) or portable document format (PDF).
