EST Media contact: 606-5902 Wednesday, February 1, 1995 STATE AND METROPOLITAN AREA EMPLOYMENT AND UNEMPLOYMENT: DECEMBER 1994 Unemployment rates were lower in December 1994 than a month earlier in 27 states, higher in 16 states and the District of Columbia, and unchanged in 7 states, the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the U.S. Department of Labor reported today. The national unemployment rate was 5.4 percent, compared with 5.6 percent in November. Nonfarm payroll employment rose in 28 states over the month. State Unemployment (Seasonally Adjusted) New York and South Carolina had the largest declines in their unemployment rates from November to December, both dropping by 0.9 percentage point. Three other states--Illinois, North Carolina, and Rhode Island--had decreases of 0.8 percentage point over the month. Idaho reported the largest over-the-month increase, from 5.7 to 6.4 percent. Nebraska had the lowest unemployment rate among the states, 2.7 percent, and 16 other states registered unemployment rates of less than 4.4 percent. At 8.3 percent, West Virginia had the highest unemployment rate in December, followed by Alaska at 7.8 percent. (See table 1 and chart 1.) Nonfarm Payroll Employment (Seasonally Adjusted) Twenty-eight states recorded December gains in nonfarm employment. A number of states were affected by the hiring of temporary election workers, which increased the November job counts but correspondingly decreased the -------------------------------------------------------------- | Beginning with the release of January 1995 data in March, | |estimates for state labor force data will be revised to | |reflect updated population controls for all states and | |reestimation of statistical models for the 39 nondirect-use | |states and the District of Columbia. Of the 22 states experiencing December job declines, 9 were attributable to government employment losses that were larger in magnitude than the private sector job gains. States in the West South Central and Mountain divisions had the strongest employment increases, while losses occurred for most states in the East South Central, New England, and West North Central divisions. (See table 3.) Over-the-month employment growth was spread across the goods-producing and service-producing sectors. Thirty-one states reported gains in the goods sector, while 27 states added service-producing jobs. Thirty-seven states had employment growth in the services industry, and an equal number added jobs in trade. Nearly all states in the East North Central, Mountain, and West South Central divisions had manufacturing employment increases. The District of Columbia and Hawaii continued to report the only over- the-year losses in December. (See chart 2.) Employment growth from December 1993 to December 1994 ranged from 6.2 percent in Utah to 0.2 percent in California. Nearly all states had over-the-year increases in trade and services, and 46 states added construction jobs during this period. Manufacturing employment rose in 36 states and the District of Columbia. NOTE: Monthly payroll employment data are provided on a seasonally adjusted basis for all states and the District of Columbia, permitting both current and over-the-year comparisons of the data. The state data are intended for individual state analyses only. Because the state data are not designed for national aggregation, a summation could present a misleading picture of national trends. (See Technical Note.) Metropolitan Area Unemployment (Not Seasonally Adjusted) Of the 262 areas for which December data are available, 130 had unemployment rates below 4.5 percent, while 19 had rates of 7.5 percent and above. McAllen-Edinburg-Mission, Tex., continued to have the highest unemployment rate at 15.4 percent. The lowest rates were in Madison, Wis. (1.9 percent), Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill, N.C. (2.0 percent), and Lincoln, Neb., and Nashville, Tenn.(both 2.1 percent). _________________________________________________________________________ The State and Metropolitan Area Employment and Unemployment release for January 1995 will be issued on Thursday, March 9, 1995.
