EDT Wednesday, August 2, 1995 STATE AND METROPOLITAN AREA EMPLOYMENT AND UNEMPLOYMENT: JUNE 1995 Unemployment rates were lower in June 1995 than a month earlier in 24 states, higher in 19 states and the District of Columbia, and unchanged in 7 states, the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the U.S. Department of Labor reported today. The national unemployment rate was 5.6 percent in June, essentially unchanged from 5.7 percent in May. Total nonfarm payroll employment increased in 32 states over the month. State Unemployment (Seasonally Adjusted) Illinois showed the largest unemployment rate decline between May and June, 1.4 percentage points, to 4.1 percent. California's jobless rate decreased 0.9 percentage point to 7.6 percent. Wisconsin (down 0.6 point) and Arizona (down 0.5 point) were the only other states to report declines of as much as half a percentage point. Of the states with increases, none was more than 0.6 percentage point. Over the year, 42 states experienced declining unemployment rates. South Carolina recorded the largest drop (1.6 percentage points), followed by Arizona (1.5 points) and Arkansas (1.4 points). Eleven other states had decreases of a percentage point or more. The magnitude of increases among the six states and the District of Columbia with higher unemployment rates over the past year was small (0.6 percentage point or less). For the second month in a row, South Dakota had the lowest unemployment rate, 2.3 percent in June. Nebraska had the next lowest, 2.5 percent. Fourteen other states recorded rates below 4.5 percent. At 8.7 percent, the District of Columbia had the highest jobless rate, followed by California and West Virginia, both 7.6 percent. Overall, 33 states had jobless rates below the U.S. rate, while 15 states and the District of Columbia had higher rates. (See table 1 and chart 1.) Nonfarm Payroll Employment (Seasonally Adjusted) Employment in many states rebounded somewhat in June from a weak showing in the prior month. Utah once again led all states, with an over- the-month increase of 0.7 percent. Kansas and New Mexico also had sizable advances--0.6 percent. Delaware had the largest percentage decline ( -0.8 percent), and Michigan had the largest job loss (-15,000) over the month, both due to slowdowns in manufacturing. Employment in the goods-producing industries showed mixed signs in June. While manufacturing remained weak, construction reversed the losses - 2 - experienced in May. Only 17 states and the District of Columbia had manufacturing increases, but 31 states and the District of Columbia experienced gains in construction. The service-producing sector added jobs in 36 states in June. About half of the states showed growth in transportation and public utilities; finance, insurance, and real estate; and government. About seven-tenths of the states had increases in trade and services. Even though employment gains were not very large, they were spread across nearly all geographic regions. Only the East North Central states lost jobs over the month. The West North Central and West South Central divisions each added 0.3 percent to payroll job totals. Over the year, seven states have experienced job increases in excess of 4.0 percent. The four largest gainers--Utah, Nevada, Arizona, and New Mexico--were all Mountain states. Only the District of Columbia (15,200) lost more than 5,000 in employment. (See chart 2.) NOTE: Monthly payroll employment data are provided on a seasonally adjusted basis for all states and the District of Columbia, permitting both current and over-the-year comparisons of the data. The state data are intended for individual state analyses only. Because the state data are not designed for national aggregation, a summation could present a misleading picture of national trends. (See Technical Note.) Metropolitan Area Unemployment (Not Seasonally Adjusted) Of the 271 areas for which June data are available, 90 had unemployment rates below 4.5 percent, while 29 had rates higher than 7.5 percent. The lowest rates were in Madison, Wis. (1.7 percent), and Sioux Falls, S.D. (1.8 percent). McAllen-Edinburg-Mission, Tex., had the highest unemployment rate--18.2 percent--followed by Laredo, Tex. (16.8 percent), and Modesto, Calif. (15.8 percent). Dutchess County, N.Y., experienced the largest over-the-year reduction in its jobless rate--down 3.2 percentage points. Rates in 63 other areas declined by 1.0 point or more. Laredo, Tex., had the largest over-the-year increase, as its rate shot up 7.0 percentage points to 16.8 percent. Four other areas experienced increases of 1.0 point or more, but none changed by more than 1.7 points. (See table 5.) ___________________________________________________________________________ The State and Metropolitan Area Employment and Unemployment release for July 1995 will be issued on Wednesday, August 30, 1995.
