Revised seasonally adjusted average hourly and weekly earnings of Technical information: (202) 606-6555 USDL 95-170 Media contact: 606-5902 WIRE EMBARGO UNTIL 10:00 A.M. (EDT) FRIDAY, MAY 12, 1995 REAL EARNINGS IN APRIL 1995 Real average weekly earnings rose 0.6 percent from March to April after seasonal adjustment, according to preliminary data released today by the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the U.S. Department of Labor. This rise stemmed from a 0.6 percent increase in average hourly earnings coupled with a 0.3 percent increase in average weekly hours. These gains were partially offset by a 0.3 percent rise in the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W). Data on average weekly earnings are collected from the payroll reports of private nonfarm establishments. Earnings of both full-time and part-time workers holding production or nonsupervisory jobs are included. Real average weekly earnings are calculated by adjusting earnings in current dollars for changes in the CPI-W. Average weekly earnings rose by 2.4 percent between April of 1994 and 1995 as a result of a 3.0 percent increase in average hourly earnings being partially offset by a 0.6 percent decline in average weekly hours. After adjustment for a 3.2 percent gain in the CPI-W over the same period, real average weekly earnings fell by 0.8 percent. Before adjustment for seasonal change and deflation by the CPI-W, average weekly earnings were $391.02 in April 1995, compared with $381.92 a year earlier. _____________________________ Real Earnings for May 1995 will be released on Tuesday, June 13, 1995. ******************************************************************* * The estimates of average weekly hours and average hourly and * * weekly earnings from January 1990 forward will be revised * * with the release of May data to reflect new employment bench- * * marks and updated seasonal adjustment factors. * ******************************************************************* Table A.
