Earnings of production or nonsupervisory workers on private Technical information: (202) 606-6555 USDL 96-333 Media contact: 606-5902 WIRE EMBARGO UNTIL 10:00 A.M. (EDT) TUESDAY, AUGUST 13, 1996 REAL EARNINGS IN JULY 1996 Real average weekly earnings fell by 1.5 percent from June to July after seasonal adjustment, according to preliminary data released today by the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the U.S. Department of Labor. This decrease followed a sharp increase in June (2.2 percent). The large decrease in July resulted from declines in both average weekly hours (1.2 percent) and average hourly earnings (0.2 percent). A 0.2 percent rise in the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W) also contributed to the decline. Data on average weekly earnings are collected from the payroll reports of private nonfarm establishments. Earnings of both full-time and part-time workers holding production or nonsupervisory jobs are included. Real average weekly earnings are calculated by adjusting earnings in current dollars for changes in the CPI-W. Average weekly earnings rose by 2.5 percent between July of 1995 and 1996 as a result of a 3.1 percent increase in average hourly earnings, which was partially offset by a 0.6 percent decrease in average weekly hours. After adjustment for a 2.9 percent gain in the CPI-W over the same period, real average weekly earnings fell by 0.4 percent. This decline followed an increase of 1.7 percent for the year ended in June 1996. Before adjustment for seasonal change and deflation by the CPI-W, average weekly earnings were $406.20 in July 1996, compared with $396.37 a year earlier. _____________________________ Real Earnings for August 1996 will be released on Friday, September 13, 1996.
