Revised seasonally adjusted average hourly and weekly earnings of Technical information: (202) 606-6555 USDL 95-366 Media contact: 606-5902 WIRE EMBARGO UNTIL 10:00 A.M. (EDT) WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 13, 1995 REAL EARNINGS IN AUGUST 1995 Real average weekly earnings fell 0.9 percent from July to August after seasonal adjustment, according to preliminary data released today by the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the U.S. Department of Labor. This drop stemmed from a 0.6 percent decline in average weekly hours coupled with a 0.2 percent decrease in average hourly earnings. A 0.1 percent increase in the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W) also contributed to the decline. Data on average weekly earnings are collected from the payroll reports of private nonfarm establishments. Earnings of both full-time and part-time workers holding production or nonsupervisory jobs are included. Real average weekly earnings are calculated by adjusting earnings in current dollars for changes in the CPI-W. Average weekly earnings rose by 2.4 percent between August of 1994 and 1995 as a result of a 3.0 percent increase in average hourly earnings which was partially offset by a 0.6 percent decline in average weekly hours. After adjustment for a 2.5 percent gain in the CPI-W over the same period, real average weekly earnings fell by 0.1 percent. Before adjustment for seasonal change and deflation by the CPI-W, average weekly earnings were $396.02 in August 1995, compared with $386.75 a year earlier. _____________________________ Real Earnings for September 1995 will be released on Friday, October 13, 1995.
