Household Survey Data

Each month the Current Population Survey (CPS) provides labor force, employment, and unemployment estimates with a variety of demographic, social, and economic characteristics. The CPS is a monthly survey of households conducted by the U.S. Census Bureau for BLS, using a sample of about 60,000 households that is scientifically designed to represent the civilian noninstitutional population of the United States.

The tables presented below contain data for the nation. Labor force, employment, and unemployment statistics for states and local areas are developed separately by the Local Area Unemployment Statistics (LAUS) program.

For more information regarding CPS data concepts, methodology, and reliability of estimates, please see Chapter 1 of the BLS Handbook of Methods. Additional technical information can be found on the CPS technical documentation page.
