Real average hourly earnings rise 0.4 percent over the year

Real average hourly earnings for all employees on nonfarm payrolls rose 0.4 percent, from January 2013 to January 2014. This increase stems from a 1.9‑percent increase in average hourly earnings being partially offset by a 1.6‑percent increase in the Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers.

From January 2013 to January 2014, the increase in real average hourly earnings, combined with an unchanged average workweek, resulted in a 0.4-percent increase in real average weekly earnings over this period.

These hours and earnings data are from the Current Employment Statistics program. Data for the most recent two months are preliminary. The seasonally adjusted constant dollar series have been revised to reflect new seasonal adjustment factors calculated for the Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers (CPI-U). This revision affects real earnings for all employees from January 2009 through December 2013.
