Employment change in baseball playoff metro areas, August 2009–August 2014

From August 2013 to August 2014, among the 10 metropolitan areas that are home to baseball teams in the 2014 Major League Baseball (MLB) playoffs, San Francisco-San Mateo-Redwood City, California (home of the Giants), had the largest over-the-year percentage change in employment, at 3.3 percent. Detroit-Warren-Livonia, Michigan (home of the Tigers), had the lowest over-the-year change at 0.1 percent.

In August 2014, among all of the nation’s metropolitan areas, 306 had over-the-year increases in nonfarm payroll employment, 57 had decreases, and 9 had no change. The largest over-the-year employment increases occurred in New York-Northern New Jersey-Long Island, New York-New Jersey-Pennsylvania (+156,500, or an increase of 1.8 percent), Houston-Sugar Land-Baytown, Texas (+107,400, or 3.9 percent), and Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington, Texas (+101,500, or 3.3 percent). The largest over-the-year percentage gain in employment occurred in Lawrence, Kansas (+5.9 percent), followed by Midland, Texas (+5.6 percent), and Kokomo, Indiana (+5.3 percent).

The largest over-the-year decrease in employment occurred in Atlantic City-Hammonton, New Jersey (−3,800), followed by Syracuse, New York (−3,600, or a decline of 1.2 percent), and Peoria, Illinois (-3,500, or a decline of 1.9 percent). The largest over-the-year percentage decreases in employment occurred in Atlantic City-Hammonton, New Jersey (−2.7 percent), Fairbanks, Alaska (−2.4 percent), and Danville, Virginia (−2.3 percent).
