Over 12 months ended November 2017, the Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers (CPI-U) rose 2.2 percent. The indexes for food and energy both increased.

The food index increased 1.4 percent over the last 12 months. The food at home index increased 0.6 percent, while the index for food away from home rose 2.4 percent. As a whole, food expenditures had a relative importance weight of 13.6 percent, food at home accounting for 7.8 percent of consumer spending, and food away from home accounted for the remaining 5.8 percent.

The energy index increased 9.4 percent over the past 12 months, with all of the major component indexes rising over this period. Energy accounted for 7.4 percent of consumer spending. Within the energy commodities category, which increased 16.4 percent, the fuel oil index rose 18.6 percent and the gasoline index increased 16.5 percent. The energy services index increased 2.8 percent, which included an increase of 3.6 percent in the index for natural gas and a 2.5 percent increase in the electricity index.

The indexes for new vehicles, used cars and trucks, and apparel all declined over the past year. The index for medical care commodities increased 1.8 percent.

The 12-month change in the shelter index (which has a relative importance weight of 33.9 percent) increased 3.2 percent from November 2016 to November 2017.
