The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) is the principal Federal agency responsible for measuring labor market activity, working conditions, and prices changes in the economy. Its mission is to collect, analyze, and disseminate economic information to support public and private decision-making.
This conference will give current BLS data users and future data users the opportunity to speak with BLS economists and learn more about the economic data series we produce. BLS program sessions will also be conducted and will provide an overview of the program, how the data are collected, uses, trends, and how to access the data from the BLS web site.
Special guest speakers for the conference will be David Friedman and Steven Henderson from the Bureau's national office in Washington, D.C. David Friedman is the Associate Commissioner for the Bureau's Office of Prices and Living Conditions where he oversees programs for the Consumer Price Index, Producer Price Index, Import and Export Price Indexes, and Consumer Expenditure Survey and a research division that conducts frontier research on price index and consumer expenditure issues. Steve Henderson is the Chief of the Branch of Information and Analysis with the Consumer Expenditure Survey (CE) program.
We invite you to stop by and chat with BLS program specialists, staff from the Illinois Department of Employment Security's Labor Market Information office, or sit in on a program overview session. This conference is for you if you want to learn more about how the Bureau measures:
- Inflation and cost of living from the Consumer Price Index, Producer Price Index, Import/Export Price Indexes, and Consumer Expenditure Survey programs
- Employment and Unemployment from the Quarterly Census of Employment and Wages, Current Employment Statistics, Current Population Survey, and Local Area Unemployment Statistics programs
- Pay and Benefits from the National Compensation Survey and Occupational Employment Statistics programs
- Workplace Injuries, Illnesses, and Fatalities from the Occupational Safety and Health Statistics program
