State and Metro Area Employment, Hours, & Earnings

Change to CES State and Area data access with release of data on March 11, 2009

With the release of the estimates for January 2010, nonfarm payroll employment, hours, and earnings data for States and areas were revised to reflect the incorporation of March 2009 benchmarks and the re-computation of seasonal adjustment factors for State estimates. The revisions affect all not seasonally adjusted data from April 2008 forward, all seasonally adjusted data from January 2005 forward, and selected series subject to historical revisions.

Additionally, this year BLS implemented a common start year of 1990 for all seasonally adjusted series where possible. This change mainly affects statewide sector series and MSAs, as the seasonally adjusted statewide supersectors are already published with a start year of 1990.

The Current Employment Statistics (CES) program also published the first official all employee hours and earnings series on a not seasonally adjusted basis. These series were developed to measure the average hourly earnings and average weekly hours of all nonfarm private sector employees.

Historically, the CES program has published average hours and earnings series for production workers in the goods-producing industries and non-supervisory workers in the service-providing industries. These workers account for about 80 percent of total private nonfarm employment.

The all employee hours and earnings series are more comprehensive in coverage, thereby providing improved information for analyzing economic trends and for constructing other major economic indicators, including nonfarm productivity and personal income.

The introduction of these new data series required the modification of data type codes for accessing CES data.

For more information on the series ID code, link to CES State and Area Series Code Structure Under NAICS. This update became effective with the release of January 2010 estimates on March 10, 2010. The new data type codes are as follows:
