California: Price Movements of Top Exports and Other Highlights

In 2023, California ranked second among U.S. states and territories in total exports. The 2023 export trade dollar value from California totaled $178.7 billion, a decrease of 4.0 percent from 2022. The price index for the top export industry in California, computer and electronic product manufacturing, increased in April. Export prices for transportation equipment manufacturing, machinery manufacturing, and chemical manufacturing also advanced in April.
Top Six California Exports by Trade Dollar Value, 2023
- California exports represented 8.9 percent of the U.S. total in 2023.
- California accounted for 17.7 percent of total U.S. exports of computer and electronic product manufacturing by trade dollar value in 2023, ranking second among all states.
- The top 6 export industries from California accounted for 67.8 percent of the state's total 2023 export trade dollar value.
U.S. Export Price Indexes: Computer and Electronic Product Manufacturing
- Computer and electronic product manufacturing export prices ticked up 0.1 percent in April.
- Despite the monthly advance, export computer and electronic product manufacturing prices decreased 0.2 percent for the 12 months ended April 2024.
- A 2.0-percent decline in prices for semiconductor and other electronic component manufacturing led the 12-month drop in the price index for computer and electronic product manufacturing.
U.S. Export Price Indexes: Transportation Equipment Manufacturing
- The price index for export transportation equipment manufacturing rose 0.5 percent in April.
- Transportation equipment manufacturing export prices rose 5.0 percent for the 12 months ended April 2024.
- A 6.1-percent increase in prices for aerospace product and parts manufacturing led the 12-month advance in prices for transportation equipment manufacturing.
U.S. Export Price Indexes: Machinery Manufacturing
- The price index for export machinery manufacturing rose 0.4 percent in April.
- Export machinery manufacturing prices increased 2.1 percent over the past year.
- A 3.1-percent increase in prices for agriculture, construction, and mining machinery manufacturing contributed to the 12-month advance in prices for machinery manufacturing.
U.S. Export Price Indexes: Chemical Manufacturing
- Export chemical manufacturing prices increased 0.4 percent in April.
- The price index for chemical manufacturing exports declined 2.2 percent over the past year.
- An 8.6-percent decrease in prices for other basic inorganic chemical manufacturing led the 12-month decline in prices for chemical manufacturing.
