Labor Force Statistics from the Current Population Survey

Asians
The monthly household labor force survey, or Current Population Survey (CPS), has labor force, employment, and unemployment statistics for Asians. (Learn how we define race.) These estimates are available in the Employment Situation news release and other products.

Detailed Asian groups
People who identify themselves as Asian are further classified as Asian Indian, Chinese, Filipino, Japanese, Korean, Vietnamese, or Other Asian. The Other Asian category includes individuals of groups not listed—such as Pakistani, Hmong, and Cambodian—and those who reported two or more Asian groups.

Using these data
The data for the detailed Asian groups are not seasonally adjusted. For estimates that are not seasonally adjusted, an over-the-year comparison is recommended rather than comparing one month to the following month or one quarter to the following quarter. (Seasonal adjustment is a statistical procedure that removes the effects of normal seasonal variations from time series estimates.)
One must exercise caution when analyzing and interpreting monthly and quarterly data for detailed Asian groups because their share of the U.S. population is small and estimates for these groups are based on small sample sizes. The data for these detailed groups can be noisy, as estimates produced from smaller sample sizes are associated with larger margins of error. Using quarterly averages instead of monthly estimates, or annual averages instead of quarterly averages, can reduce the volatility in these time series.
