As we celebrate Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders this month, BLS data help us highlight their participation in the U.S. labor force. Through the Current Population Survey, BLS publishes information on the labor market characteristics of people who identify their race as Asian or Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islander (NHPI).

In the fourth quarter 2023, the 9.1 million unincorporated self-employed workers accounted for 5.7 percent of all nonagricultural workers, similar to the rate of 5.8 percent at the end of 2022. The nonagricultural self-employment rate is the number of nonagricultural unincorporated self-employed workers as a percentage of total nonagricultural employment.
Real average hourly earnings increased 0.5 percent from April 2023 to April 2024. Real earnings are earnings that have been adjusted for changes in consumer prices. The change in real average hourly earnings combined with no change in the average workweek resulted in a 0.5-percent increase in real average weekly earnings over this period.
Today we recognize World Trade Week by looking at U.S. import prices from around the globe. Overall, U.S. import prices advanced 0.9 percent in April, the largest 1-month increase since the index rose 2.9 percent in March 2022. Import prices advanced 1.1 percent over the past 12 months, the largest over-the-year increase since December 2022.
