Guess my occupation: activity requirements

Lesson description

The “Guess my occupation” activity helps students to learn more about various occupations that may interest them based on the job duties required for that job, and helps children to identify different occupations based on the job duties. Students may use the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) Career Exploration webpage to learn more about various careers. Students also may use the Occupational Outlook Handbook (OOH) as a resource to learn more about necessary skills needed to work in these occupations.

Activity objective

Students will accomplish the following:

• learn more about what workers do in their occupations
• pique their interest to learn more about different occupations
• use the Career Exploration webpage to find career information
• get acquainted with OOH as a method to find career information

Time to complete

Approximately 30 minutes

Materials

Students will need:

• a printed version of the “Guess my occupation” activity page

• a writing utensil to take notes or fill out a printed version of the activity

Instructions

Using a printed version of the “Guess my occupation” activity document, have the students:

1. Review the job duties and the pictures of people who appear to perform those occupations.

2. Match the worker who represents the job description for each occupation.

3. Students can write down the letter that corresponds to the correct job description under each occupational image.

4. Students can search each occupation and find additional information about it by accessing the Career Exploration webpage, or the OOH.

Activity assessment

At the conclusion of the activity, students should be able to:

• identify job titles with the job descriptions used to perform featured occupations;
• familiarize themselves with the job duties that are typically performed by people who work in the featured occupations;
• ask more questions about these occupations (e.g., How much education would I need? How much money could I make?); and
• broaden their curiosity potentially about other occupations (e.g., What are the duties of a weather forecaster, pilot, or fitness trainer?)
