From September 2014 to September 2015, nonfarm payroll employment went up in 302 metropolitan areas, went down in 76 areas, and stayed the same in 9.

The largest over-the-year percentage gain in employment occurred in Provo-Orem, Utah (6.2 percent), followed by Medford, Oregon (4.9 percent), and San Jose-Sunnyvale-Santa Clara, California. (4.8 percent). The largest over-the-year employment increases occurred in Los Angeles-Long Beach-Anaheim, California (+129,900), New York-Newark-Jersey City, New York-New Jersey-Pennsylvania (+115,400), and Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington, Texas (+98,700).

The largest over-the-year percentage decreases in employment occurred in Pine Bluff, Arkansas (−6.5 percent), Bloomington, Indiana (−4.0 percent), and Cape Girardeau, Missouri-Illinois, and Lawton, Oklahoma. (−2.7 percent each). The largest over-the-year decreases in employment occurred in Davenport-Moline-Rock Island, Iowa-Illinois (−4,200), Lafayette, Louisiana (−3,700), and Bloomington, Indiana (−3,100).
