NLSY79 Geocode Data

The NLSY79 geocode CD specifies the actual country, state, county and geographic region of each respondent's location of birth and residence at the age of 14. In addition, detailed geographic mobility information was collected during the 1979-80 and 1982 surveys; data were gathered on the country/county/state and timing of up to five residential moves since January 1978 or since the last interview.

Variables for each survey year include:

  • County and state (or country if outside the U.S.) at each interview date.
  • County and state location of current job.
  • Location of most recent college attended at each interview date.
  • Selected environmental variables for county of residence from the Census County and City Data Books.
The 50 states, the District of Columbia, and outlying areas of the United States (e.g., Puerto Rico, Guam) were coded using the Federal Information Processing Standards (FIPS) Publication 5-1. Counties were coded using FIPS 6-1. These standardized codes allow the researcher the opportunity to merge easily other data bases such as the City and County Data Book which use the same coding scheme as the youth data. Countries other than U.S. were coded using a set of codes designed by the National Opinion Research Center (NORC).

Due to the detailed nature of the information found on the Geocode CD, use of this dataset is restricted to those meeting confidentiality requirements. The Geocode CD is released only to those who satisfactorily complete the Bureau of Labor Statistics geocode agreement procedure. Final approval rests with the Commissioner of BLS.
