Employment increased in 349 of the 355 largest U.S. counties from March 2021 to March 2022. Clark County, Nevada, had the largest over-the-year percentage increase, at 12.5 percent, followed by Orange County, Florida (+12.0 percent), and San Francisco County, California (+10.1 percent). In March 2022, national employment rose to 147.6 million, a 5.0-percent increase from March 2021.

Average weekly wages increased in 348 of the 355 largest U.S. counties from March 2021 to March 2022, with the largest percentage increases occurring in Peoria County, Illinois (+25.8 percent), Elkhart County, Indiana (+16.6 percent), and Benton County, Arkansas (+16.4 percent). In the first quarter of 2022, average weekly wages for the nation increased to $1,374, a 6.7-percent increase over the year.

All of the 10 largest U.S. counties had over-the-year percentage increases in both employment and average weekly wages in March 2022. New York County, New York, had the largest percentage gain in employment, at 8.8 percent, while Miami-Dade County, Florida, had the largest percentage gain in average weekly wages, at 13.6 percent.

In March 2022, 9 of the 10 largest U.S. counties had average weekly wages above the national level of $1,374, with Maricopa County, Arizona ($1,308) being the exception. Cook County, Illinois had an over-the-year increase below the national rate in both employment (+4.6 percent) and average weekly wages (+5.8 percent).
