Consumer prices up 3.0 percent over the year ended June 2023

Over the year ended June 2023, consumer prices increased 3.0 percent, after increasing 4.0 percent over the year ended in May 2023. The June 2023 increase was the smallest 12-month increase since March 2021. A year earlier, in June 2022, the 12-month increase in overall prices was 9.1 percent, and had been 7.0 percent or higher in the preceding 6 months.

Over the the 12 months ended June 2023, prices for food at home increased 4.7 percent, compared with a 12-month increase of 13.5 percent for the year ended August 2022. Prices for food away from home increased 7.7 percent for the year ended June 2023.
Gasoline prices decreased 26.5 percent over the most recent 12 months, while natural gas prices fell 18.6 percent, and fuel oil prices fell 36.6 percent. Electricity prices rose 5.4 percent over the most recent 12 months. Gasoline prices increased 59.9 over the year ended June 2022. Natural gas prices increased 106.7 over the year ended May 2022.
The 12-month increase in prices for new vehicles was 4.1 percent in June 2023, compared with 13.2 percent in April 2022. Used car and truck prices were 5.2 percent lower in June 2023 compared with a year earlier, and have been decreasing since November 2022, as measured by 12-month change. Used car and truck prices increased 45.2 over the year ended June 2021.
