In March, unemployment rates were higher in 3 states, lower in 1 state, and stable in 46 states and the District of Columbia. Nonfarm payroll employment increased in 6 states and was essentially unchanged in 44 states and the District.

Jobless rates were higher in March than a year earlier in 279 of the 387 metropolitan areas, lower in 72, and unchanged in 36. Nonfarm payroll employment increased over the year in 23 metropolitan areas, decreased in 1, and was essentially unchanged in 363.

In 2024, annual average unemployment rates increased in 21 states and were little changed in 29 states and the District of Columbia. Employment-population ratios decreased in 5 states and were little changed in 45 states and the District.
