Of all private nonagricultural wage and salary workers in the Northeast, 3.6 percent were employed in educational services in 1997. The next highest figure—2.6 percent—was for the Midwest. In the South the proportion of workers in educational services was 2.2 percent and in the West it was slightly lower, at 2.0 percent.

The proportions of private workers in health services followed the same regional pattern. The largest share—11.8 percent—was found in the Northeast and the next highest in the Midwest—10.5 percent. Among workers in the South, 9.7 percent were in health services and in the West, the percentage was 8.5 percent.
