Employment and unemployment in the Northeast, July 2011

In July 2011, among the 50 metropolitan areas in the Northeast Region, 5 recorded unemployment rates above 11 percent and 5 recorded unemployment rates below 6 percent.
Vineland-Millville-Bridgeton, New Jersey, recorded the highest unemployment rate (13.9 percent) and Portsmouth, New Hampshire, the lowest (4.7 percent).
In July, three Northeast Region metropolitan areas reported over-the-year increases in nonfarm payroll employment greater than 4 percent: Rochester-Dover, New Hampshire (5.6 percent); Pittsfield, Massachusetts (5.4 percent); and Lebanon, Pennsylvania (4.9 percent). The metropolitan areas reporting the largest decreases in employment were Vineland-Millville-Bridgeton, New Jersey (−3.1 percent), Barnstable Town, Massachusetts (−2.8 percent), and Glens Falls, New York (−2.4 percent).
