Job openings, hires, and separations rates, August 2014

In August 2014, the nationwide job openings rate was 3.4 percent on a seasonally adjusted basis, up from 3.2 percent in July. The hires rate was 3.3 percent, down from 3.6 percent the previous month. The total separations rate was at 3.2 percent in August, essentially unchanged from 3.3 percent in July. Total separations includes quits, layoffs and discharges, and other separations.

There were 4.8 million job openings on the last business day of August, up from 4.6 million in July. The number of hires was 4.6 million, down from 4.9 million in July, and the total number of separations was 4.4 million, little changed from July.
