Prices for meats, poultry, fish, and eggs decreased 7.0 percent from a peak in August 2015 to February 2017 despite prices for all items increasing 2.8 percent over this period. Meats, poultry, fish, and eggs make up about 1.7 percent of the total Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers (CPI-U) market basket. From February 2007 to February 2017, the meats, poultry, fish, and eggs index increased 27.9 percent.

Prices for meats, which represent the largest component of this index, decreased 8.1 percent from a peak in January 2015 to February 2017, with beef and veal prices declining 10.1 percent over this period and pork prices falling 9.4 percent. Fish and seafood prices increased 3.4 percent from a low point in February 2016 to February 2017, the only major component of the meats, poultry, fish, and eggs index to increase over this period.
Egg prices in February 2017 were 36.6 percent lower than they were at their August 2015 peak. Eggs represent only 0.1 percent of the entire CPI-U market basket.
