The private industry hires rate was unchanged for the third consecutive month, at 4.1 percent in September 2023. Among the major industries, rate changes were mixed over the month. The hires rate in construction decreased 0.8 percentage point from 4.6 percent in August 2023 to 3.8 percent in September 2023. In trade, transportation, and utilities, the hires rate increased 0.3 percentage point over the month to 4.2 percent. Hires rates among the major industries ranged from 2.1 percent in financial activities to 7.0 percent in leisure and hospitality. Rates in these industries were 2.3 percent and 6.5 percent, respectively, in August 2023.
The government hires rate remained 1.6 percent for the third month in a row with rates for federal government and state and local government at 1.5 percent and 1.6 percent, respectively, in September 2023.
