In May 2023, there were 215 metropolitan areas that had unemployment rates below the national U.S. rate of 3.4 percent, 153 areas had rates above the national rate, and 21 areas had rates equal to that of the nation. Burlington-South Burlington, Vermont, had the lowest unemployment rate, 1.3 percent, in May 2023. The next lowest rate was in Manchester, New Hampshire, 1.4 percent.

Dover-Durham and Portsmouth, both in New Hampshire-Maine, each had unemployment rates of 1.5 percent. Unemployment rates in Decatur, Alabama, and Sioux Falls, South Dakota, were both 1.7 percent. Unemployment rates were below 2.0 percent in 5 more areas: Ames, Iowa; Huntsville, Alabama; Bismarck, North Dakota; Daphne-Fairhope-Foley, Alabama; and Fargo, North Dakota-Minnesota.

El Centro, California, had the highest rate, 16.0 percent. Unemployment rates were also above 7.0 percent in Yuba City, Madera, Fresno, Hanford-Corcoran, Bakersfield, Merced, and Visalia-Porterville, all in California, and Yuma, Arizona.

Among metropolitan areas with a 2010 Census population of at least 1 million, Birmingham-Hoover, Alabama, had the lowest jobless rate, 2.0 percent. The next lowest rates among these large metropolitan areas were in Boston-Cambridge-Nashua, Massachusetts-New Hampshire, 2.1 percent, and Baltimore-Columbia-Towson, Maryland, 2.2 percent. Las Vegas-Henderson-Paradise, Nevada, had the highest jobless rate, 5.6 percent.

Unemployment rates were 3.5 percent in Chicago-Naperville-Elgin, Illinois-Indiana-Wisconsin; 4.1 percent in New York-Newark-Jersey City, New York-New Jersey-Pennsylvania; and 4.5 percent in Los Angeles-Long Beach-Anaheim, California, in May 2023.
