Import and export air passenger fares decrease in 2015

Export air passenger fares declined 15.0 percent in 2015, the largest calendar-year drop since the index was first published in 1987. Latin American and Caribbean (−17.8 percent), Asian (−14.6 percent), and European (−11.7 percent) export air passenger fares were all down over the year. Export air passenger fare indexes measure changes in fare prices paid to U.S. carriers by foreign residents for international travel.

Import air passenger fares fell 9.9 percent in 2015, the largest calendar-year decrease since the index was first published in 1989. European fares, which make up 44.7 percent of the index, were also down 9.9 percent for the year. Import air passenger fare indexes measure fares paid to foreign carriers by U.S. residents for international travel.
