Management, professional, and related occupations most common among veterans and nonveterans

In 2018, 9.1 million military veterans age 18 and older were employed, accounting for about 1 in 20 civilian workers in the United States. Regardless of veteran status, most men worked in management, professional, and related occupations. Male veterans and nonveterans were about equally likely to be employed in this occupational group. Eighteen percent of male veterans worked in production, transportation, and material moving occupations, along with 17 percent of male nonveterans.

Female veterans and nonveterans were also most likely to work in management, professional, and related occupations. Half of female veterans worked in this occupational group in 2018, a higher proportion than female nonveterans (44 percent). Female veterans were less likely than female nonveterans to work in service occupations (15 percent versus 21 percent).
