Kahului-Wailuku-Lahaina unemployment rate down 14.1 points over the year ended July 2021

Among U.S. metropolitan areas, the largest over-the-year unemployment rate decrease in July occurred in Kahului-Wailuku-Lahaina, Hawaii (Kalawao and Maui counties), where unemployment rates decreased from 23.3 percent in July 2020 to 9.2 percent in July 2021, a decline of 14.1 percentage points. Unemployment rates fell over the year by at least 10.0 percentage points in an additional three areas: Atlantic City-Hammonton, New Jersey; Orlando-Kissimmee-Sanford, Florida; and Las Vegas-Henderson-Paradise, Nevada.

The only over-the-year unemployment rate increase was in Pueblo, Colorado (+0.8 percentage point).
The unemployment rate in Logan, Utah-Idaho decreased 1.4 percentage points over the year, from 3.2 percent to 1.8 percent, which was the lowest unemployment rate among metropolitan areas. Yuma, Arizona, had the highest jobless rate in July 2021, 20.1 percent, which was 4.7 percentage points lower than a year earlier.
All of the 51 metropolitan areas with a 2010 Census population of 1 million or more had over-the-year unemployment rate decreases in July 2021. The largest jobless rate declines in large metro areas were in Orlando-Kissimmee-Sanford (−10.3 percentage points), and Las Vegas-Henderson-Paradise (−10.2 points). The smallest over-the-year rate decreases occurred in Denver-Aurora-Lakewood, Colorado (−2.0 percentage points), and Louisville/Jefferson County, Kentucky-Indiana (−2.2 points).
The national unemployment rate declined 4.8 percentage points over the year, from 10.5 percent in July 2020 to 5.7 percent in July 2021.
