Time spent in leisure and sports activities, 2022

On an average day in 2022, nearly everyone age 15 and older engaged in some sort of leisure and sport activity, such as watching TV, socializing, or exercising. Of those who engaged in leisure and sports activities, men spent more time in these activities (5.8 hours) than did women (5.1 hours).

Men were more likely than women to participate in sports, exercise, and recreation on any given day—21 percent compared with 19 percent. On days they participated, men also spent more time in these activities than did women—1.6 hours compared with 1.3 hours.

For people age 15 and older, watching TV was the leisure and sport activity that occupied the most time (2.8 hours), accounting for about half of all leisure time, on average. Playing games and computer use for leisure and socializing and communicating, were the next most common leisure and sports activities. On an average day in 2022, playing games and computer use for leisure, and socializing and communication accounted for 34 minutes each for people age 15 and older.
