Unemployment rates higher in 189 metro areas in year ended August 2023

Unemployment rates were higher in August 2023 than a year earlier in 189 of the 389 metropolitan areas, lower in 186 areas, and unchanged in 14 areas. A total of nine areas had jobless rates of less than 2.0 percent and five areas had rates of at least 8.0 percent.

In August, Bismarck, North Dakota, had the lowest unemployment rate, 1.5 percent. The next lowest rate was in Fargo, North Dakota-Minnesota, 1.6 percent. El Centro, California, and Yuma, Arizona, had the highest rates, 19.7 percent and 18.7 percent, respectively. A total of 221 areas had August jobless rates below the U.S. rate of 3.9 percent, 151 areas had rates above it, and 17 areas had rates equal to that of the nation.

The largest over-the-year unemployment rate increase in August occurred in Vineland-Bridgeton, New Jersey (2.9 percentage points), followed by El Centro, California (2.7 points). Thirty other areas had rate increases of at least 1.0 percentage point. Kokomo, Indiana, had the largest over-the-year rate decrease in August (−2.1 percentage points), while 42 other areas had rate declines of at least 1.0 point.
